Practice Rules

ALWAYS warm-up and stretch, this helps to prevent strains and other injuries.

Do not attempt any stunts or tricks without a coach present.

Let a coach know if you are injured before you start practice or if you become injured during practice.

Come Dressed In your Practice “CheerGear” . For practices immediately after school you will need to bring your practice clothes with you to school-including poms.

BE ON TIME! -

PLEASE bring water bottles with you to practice! For practices immediately after school, we will take a short rest time/snack break before we start practice. Please bring a healthy light snack and drink with you.

Be sure to practice at home. Stretching while watching TV is a great way to get your splits quickly!

Game Rules

Make sure your uniform is clean and ready, the night before the game.

BE ON TIME! Arrive 30 minutes prior to game. You need to stretch warm up, and practice.

Go to the restroom BEFORE the game and at halftime! We know sometimes it can’t be helped but do your best!

Stay in the designated area for cheerleaders. No sitting in the stands with friends or family while you are supposed to be cheering and no friends sitting with you in the designated area. This is also for your safety.

Pay attention to the game. It is a cheerleaders responsibility to keep the team and fans in good spirits. You can’t do that if you aren’t paying attention to the game.

NEVER yell ‘Boo’ or anything negative towards the opposing team and/or cheerleaders. This is bad sportsmanship!

Make the other team and cheerleaders feel welcome. Allow them to perform at halftime first when we are at home. Sit quietly together as a group and watch and encourage them as they perform.

Mayfield Cheerleading

We are excited this year have the opportunity to be able to support our school through our cheerleading program. Our cheerleaders not only represent Mayfield at basketball games, but throughout our school and community. This will be a fun and rewarding experience for all!

Requirements:

Must be approved by the principal.

Must maintain good grades.

Must be in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade.

Must be willing to learn new things, have fun, and work hard.

Must be able to work in a team environment.

Attendance:

Attendance is required! Cheerleading is a team sport. When one cheerleader misses practice, game, performance, etc.. it hurts the entire team. Please think of this no differently than any other sport. We have drills, formations and routines that are all disrupted when anyone is absent.

Costs:

Insurance:

The Cheerleading Program is through the Bradley County Parks and

Recreation department which requires that you pay $5 for insurance. Even if

you have your own insurance, you still must pay the $5. This takes care of

your deductibles should any accident/injury occur while at practice/games.

This money is due by Thursday, November 15th.

Uniforms:

Our uniforms will consist of a shell top, skirt, cheer briefs

The cost is $87. This money is due no later than Oct 20, 2008.

Fund Raisers:

In order to keep the total expense down we will be having fundraisers this year. This money goes for expenses incurred through the year that are not covered by uniform fees or insurance

Squads:

Last year we participated in a few local cheerleading competitions. We feel this is great experience for our squad members. However, we realize that not everyone wants to or is ready to compete This year we will have a Varsity squad and a JV squad. The Varsity squad will be competing in the Walker Valley High School Cheer Competition and the Bradley County Parks and Recreation Competition. These competitions have little to no required costs to individual cheerleaders. We also have plans to attend the Soffe Tennessee Open Championships on Jan 31, 2009 at Knoxville Coliseum in Knoxville, TN

which requires an entry fee of approximately $50 per cheerleader. We will be working hard on fundraisers to help cover the costs involved for this.

The competition (varsity) squad requires extra commitment from the cheerleader as well as the parent, with different attendance standards. The comp. squad will be selected on interest, experience, ability, attitude and commitment. If you are interested in being on the competition squad, you will need to indicate this on your application. Everyone will cheer at games and participate in all scheduled activities for the cheerleaders. Last year this included the Cleveland Christmas Parade and performing at Lee University. We hope to add to this list as we feel this is a way to promote our school and add to your child’s cheerleading experience. It is part of the cheerleaders responsibility to promote the school at all times.

Practices:

Please pick up on time! We do our best to be on time and we expect the same from you.

Practices will be 2-3 times per week for JV squad and 3-4 times per week for Varsity until basketball season starts at the end of November. Cheerleaders need to be at practice on time and in appropriate practice attire. After tryouts we will look at availability and let you know what days we are practicing. Cheerleaders are required to be at practice and school in order to cheer at games.

*Special Notes on Practice - Parents are welcome to stay and watch practice, however, please do not ‘coach’ your child during practice. If you have any questions we will be glad to answer those after practice . Any younger siblings that are at practice must be with a parent and need to stay seated and quiet. If a child becomes disruptive during practice you will need to leave. Please do not expect cheerleaders to baby sit younger siblings during practice. This is unfair to your children. This is not a babysitting service. This is an athletic team practice. We are not responsible for siblings.

Information and Communication:

We do our best to keep everyone informed on upcoming events & practices. It is your responsibility to gather information that might be missed due to illness.

Handbooks: Each cheerleader will have a handbook that they will be responsible for bringing to EACH practice. This folder should contain ALL info received regarding cheerleading, including the packet you are now reading. This folder is similar to ‘kid mail’ used in school. The difference being that most info will stay in the folder.

Daily: At the end of each practice we will make announcements and hand out any info or newsletters. Parents are usually there to pick up at this time and may need to listen in and/or ask questions.

Weekly: We have a team newsletter that we try to get out on a weekly/bi-weekly basis as needed. We usually hand this out at the first practice of the week.

E-mail: Please be sure to include your e-mail address on your child’s application. This is also an excellent form of communication.

Team Website:

We have a team website this year for communication, info and pictures.

The web address is:

eteamz.com/eagles cheerleading

Basketball Season:

We cheer for both the boys and girls teams. All games are local. So there will be no travel outside of Cleveland for basketball games. You are required to arrange your own transportation to all games, home and away. Basketball Season begins after Thanksgiving and runs until the second or third week of February. There may be extra opportunities for performance after this as well. The games begin at 6pm and end around 8pm. You need to arrive 15 minutes early to stretch and warm-up. The season schedule will be available at www.bradleyparks.com. We will be handing out copies of the basketball schedule as well.

Parent Participation and Support:

There are several areas where we require parent involvement. Every parent or family representative is REQUIRED to work the concession or collect gate fees at least two times a season. We share the proceeds with the basketball teams. This money helps pay for our end of the year sports banquet and trophies. You will be assigned your dates as soon as we get game schedules. If you can not work the assigned date YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR FINDING A REPLACEMENT.

At home, please encourage your child to stretch and practice as much as possible. The more they do at home, the more we can learn at practice. Each cheerleader will be setting a personal goal this season. These goals might be perfecting a new jump, turning a perfect cartwheel, cheering the loudest…. We encourage you to do what you can to help them achieve that goal. I’m sure by the end of the season you’ll know lots of new cheers too! “Watch this Mom!”

Cheerleader ‘Community Service‘:

Cheerleaders are required to help with cleanup in the gymnasium after games. Please allow a few extra minutes for this. We feel that this is a form of ‘community service’ and helps to teach responsibility as well as pride in the school.

Important:

Please be sure to fill out your child’s information sheet and turn it in tonite. Look for more information on activities, practices and games as we progress!!!

Thank you!!!
